How to fix and paint the MDF floor skirting board correctly: a step-by-step workshop

For the color and structure of the flooring, you can choose a suitable MDF skirting board covered with a laminated film that simulates natural materials. Most laminate flooring companies offer consumers in addition to their products special skirting collections that perfectly match the decor of each floor. In this case, you do not have to spend time choosing the skirting board of the desired color. To give the room originality, you can use contrasting shades. However, designers are advised not to allow discrepancies between the shades of the skirting board and the floor covering by more than one tone. Also, manufacturers produce products intended for painting in any color included in the RAL table. Using the MDF skirting board with a curly or perfectly even surface, you can give the interior of the room a complete and flawless look.

MDF skirting board is an environmental material that lacks phenol and epoxy resins. The product is made by vacuum pressing, and dye impregnated paper is applied to the base from MDF, which is then coated with a layer of melamine.

The last layer does not allow the baseboard to fade, and also protects it from dusting. This is especially true if MDF white oak skirting was used for decoration, as well as material of other fashionable light shades, on which pollution is very noticeable. It should be noted that these products are well washed and do not need special special care.

Methods for fixing this baseboard

The issue of properly fixing the baseboard to the floor always worries the master, especially the one who first meets MDF products. We will try to answer this question in the framework of this article. In parallel, we consider the algorithm for painting skirting boards, strict adherence to which will ensure the quality of the applied coating. Installation of MDF skirting is carried out after finishing work. There are several ways to fix the baseboard to the wall.

There are special spring clips, latches, mounting rails that facilitate the installation process. The baseboard can be glued to the wall with dispersion glue. Screws are still used, and the screwing places have to be masked with special wax. The choice of mounting method depends on the presence and type of mounting channels on the back of the baseboard. Here's how to mount the clips:

Spring clips are attached to the prepared wall with screws or self-tapping screws, maintaining a distance of 60 cm between adjacent elements. Fixing rails can be used instead of clips.
Next, lay close to the wall of the wire to hide them behind the plinth.
After proceeding with the installation of the slats on the spring clips. To do this, apply a plinth to the wall so that the mounting channels ideally coincide with the protruding parts of the clips or battens. Light pressure allows you to securely fasten the structure to the fasteners. If desired, the bar can also be easily removed.

Important! If necessary, cut the skirting board from MDF at a certain angle using a special tool called a miter box. This device allows you to quickly saw off a part of the baseboard with a sharp hacksaw on a tree, which is necessary for the accurate design of the interior and exterior corners of the room.

The subtleties and tricks of painting

Before installing the baseboard for painting, you need to familiarize yourself with the technology of the paintwork. In order for the paint layer to lie beautifully and evenly on the surface of the baseboard, you must first coat it with a special primer. After applying the primer layer, the baseboard is ground to remove the raised pile.

Then two more times apply a leveling primer, while conducting intermediate grinding. Only after these procedures, a coloring composition can be applied to the surface of the MDF skirting board, which gives the product a special decorative effect.

MDF skirting can be done with a regular brush

Selection of paint according to the RAL scale allows the master to paint the baseboard in a shade that combines with the dominant color of the interior of the room. If preference is given to coloring the skirting board in a contrasting color, then an unusual shape of the product is chosen. After all, at the same time, this element of the interior will attract attention.

Well, about environmental cleanliness, I agree. When choosing material for apartment renovation, it was found out that a tree nowadays sometimes emits more harmful fumes than MDF.
But honestly, I did not take the skirting board for painting - there were too many troubles with them: primed, sanded, repeated two more times, picked up the paint and, finally, painted without smearing the floors. Perhaps this is not for my "crooked" pens, and therefore I bought and installed ready-made ones.
