Is it possible to glue wallpaper on drywall: useful tips

Wallpapering the walls is one of the most affordable and fairly simple ways. Any stage in the repair requires a thorough approach. So is the preparation of walls for finishing. Often, to hide irregularities or close the noise insulation layer, drywall is used. But the question is: can wallpaper be glued on top then, and will they stick. Here it is important to understand some features.

Primer surface

Priming the wall

The primer will provide good adhesion of drywall and putty. It also prevents mold and mildew on the wall. Acrylic compound is mainly used during construction work, other types are also allowed. The primer can be bought ready-made or it is necessary to make it yourself according to the recipe presented on the package. Then carefully treat the surface with a roller or spray gun and wait until it dries completely.

Processing joints between sheets

Mesh-sickle for walls

First, the joints between the sheets of drywall need to be glued with a sickle - this is a fiberglass or dacron tape with an applied adhesive. It is firmly applied to the surface, thereby providing adhesion. If the serpyanka lags behind the surface, then you can use PVA glue. Care must be taken to ensure that there are no airbags.

Next, the joints are putty, laying and leveling the desired amount of putty on a sickle. Thus, the seams become invisible, and the surface is flat. After the putty dries, it can be wiped with fine-grained sandpaper.

Drywall putty

The master splits the wall

Walls will have to be putty even when they are perfectly smooth. If the wallpaper is glued directly onto drywall, they adhere firmly to the surface, and during subsequent repairs they can “grab” pieces of drywall sheets along with themselves. In addition, if the wallpaper is light, then through them joints of sheets and other defects can be seen.

The work is carried out first by starting putty, then finishing with obligatory intermediate priming of the walls. Dilute the composition in accordance with the instructions on the package. To make the mixture homogeneous, you can use a construction mixer. Putty is applied evenly with a spatula.

After complete drying, the layer is sanded with fine-grained sandpaper.

Before sticking, apply another layer of primer. Glue is chosen depending on the type of wallpaper. Any one is suitable for paper, special types of glue are sold for vinyl and non-woven wallpapers, corresponding to their characteristics. If wallpaper is chosen for painting, then glue should be for heavy wallpapers.

The composition must be prepared according to the instructions on its packaging. In most cases, after cooking, it should still stand for a certain time. Glue can be applied with a roller initially on a strip of wallpaper, then on the wall. Sheets are glued from top to bottom, and then evened out from the center to the edges. Using a rag, roller or a special spatula, air bubbles and creases are removed.

Wallpaper can also be glued on drywall, only you need to properly prepare the surface for finishing, observing simple rules. Then you will be able to avoid the consequences and additional cash costs.
