Everything about linoleum repair + how to wash linoleum after a big repair
Linoleum is a practical and common floor covering, the cost of which is available to most consumers. When carrying out repair work, the careful owner tries to protect the coating from dust and pollution using plastic film, old newspapers and other improvised materials. However, even the most accurate craftsmen cannot completely eliminate the possibility of dusting the surface. Therefore, everyone faces the problem of washing the PVC coating after the repair is completed, solving it in various ways, including folk ones. Damaged spots and areas with difficult to remove stains can be patched with scraps that must be stored for these purposes. If the linoleum repair is carried out correctly, then visually it will be difficult to determine the restored area.
How to carry out a quick repair of the coating?
To repair linoleum, prepare the tools: a sharp knife, masking tape, glue, ruler, pencil. Take out the trimmed cover scraps. Start the creative restoration process, after which your floor will become impeccable:
- It is necessary to cut out a patch of a rectangular shape from the trim of the coating remaining after the flooring, having dimensions slightly larger than the damaged area. In this case, the pattern is necessarily combined, after which both layers are cut with a sharp knife. Thus, it is possible to ensure the perfect match of the size of the patch with the place of gluing.
- Take your time to begin the process of gluing the cut piece. First, paste over the edges of the cut-out and the edges of the patch with masking tape to prevent the adhesive from getting on the front surface of the coating.
- Next, the adhesive is applied to the material, which is gently pressed against the base. To improve the process of gluing surfaces, a load is placed on top of the patch that is not removed during the day. After this period, the adhesive tape is peeled off. Linoleum in the seam area is cleaned of glue residue, while gasoline can be used.
Here is what the above process looks like in pictures:
To mask the cracks formed at the joints of the linoleum strips, use heated paraffin. The substance is poured into the formed gap so that a convex scar is formed at the junction, which is cleaned with a blunt knife. After that, the coating in the joint area is wiped with a woolen cloth.
Moisture that has fallen under the surface of linoleum contributes to the appearance of bubbles. You can get rid of such a defect by making an incision in the center of the bubble in the form of a cross. The corners of the coating are bent, the base is cleaned and dried. Next, glue is applied to the curved edges and the work is carried out in the same order as with the patch sticker described above.
How to wash linoleum after repair?
It is necessary to wash the floors covered with linoleum with clean warm, but not hot, water. When changing water, a floor rag is necessarily replaced, and the previous one is thrown away. To enhance the washing effect, soap is added to the water. Soda should not be used, since its components negatively affect the surface of the coating, which fades and loses its luster.
Dirty stains that cannot be cleaned with plain water can be removed with turpentine. Also, wet chalk powder can handle such spots. To get rid of matte stains, it is necessary to rub linoleum with mastic, which is purchased ready-made in a hardware store or prepared independently. Turpentine mastics produced for the care of parquet floors are suitable for processing linoleum. After repair, you can restore the shine to linoleum with linseed oil, which lubricates the floor covering.
Remember that any fresh contaminants are cleaned easier and faster, so when performing repairs, try to conduct daily mini-cleaning. Do not be too lazy to carefully cover all surfaces from the ubiquitous dust.
Having spent some time on this procedure at the beginning of the repair work, you will be able to return it more than after the completion of the repair. Do not forget about professional cleaning companies specializing in cleaning rooms after repairs. The special equipment available to these companies is able to cope with many types of pollution, against which an ordinary floor rag soaked in water is powerless.
