Glass floor: design features, design ideas and do-it-yourself installation

The use of glass in interior design allows you to give an office or residential space a modern look. The original glass floor, made in the form of a “window” or a transparent tape track, is the highlight of any interior. The floor made of durable glass not only visually expands the space, but also creates a feeling of weightless soaring in the air. The special attractiveness of the glass floor is achieved through the installation of a backlight made of LED strip or fluorescent lamps. At the same time, illuminated glass floors also serve as an additional source of illumination of the room.

Glass floor construction

The main structural element is the base, which ensures the reliability of the installed floor. The base can be a frame made of high strength steel, or a flat concrete surface of the base floor. The reliability of the floor depends on the quality and strength of the base.

The flooring is made of heavy-duty glass that can withstand a load of about 400 kg per square meter. For these purposes, triplex is suitable - a three-layer “cake”, and the thickness of each layer is at least 8 mm. The layers are joined using a polymer film.

Laminated glass is also used, which is a tempered material coated with a polymer layer including hollow glass microspheres. Due to the spherical shape of the microspheres, the consumption of polymer is reduced. In the manufacture of this type of glass, the method of pouring certain sizes into the mold is used.

Since the laminated glass is not subjected to cutting, it is very important to accurately measure the area of the planned glass floor. No fit in place

Glass flooring has long been stacked in large business centers. This technology is increasingly attracting the attention of ordinary citizens, striving for originality in the design of their homes and apartments.

The glass used has a high degree of strength, so the material is able to withstand repeated shocks, under the influence of which only cracks form. In case of damage, glass cannot be restored. You will have to replace the flooring, which is very unlikely, because in order to damage such a durable material, you have to try very hard.

Selection of materials and tools

In order to build a glass floor with your own hands, you need to stock up on supplies and construction tools. Here are some things to consider:

  • Measure with a high degree of accuracy and order the glass panel of the desired size.
  • Calculate the required number of metal profiles for mounting the frame, purchase material.
  • Also, after calculating the volume, purchase a decorative profile with which joints are formed between adjacent floor coverings. At the same time, try to choose a profile of such a width to close not only the places of glass fastening, but also the sections of the LED strip (backlight).
  • Choose decoration material to design the interior space of the niche. Pay attention to ceramic tiles, wood, laminate.Immediately worry about how to fix the interior trim. If it is a tile, then buy ready-made glue and grout for joints.
  • In addition to the above materials, a sealant and silicone sealant, a grinder and self-tapping screws, a screwdriver, spatulas (toothed and rubber) are useful.

Glass floor mounting

What to look for during the installation of glass flooring? How to make a glass floor in accordance with the requirements of laying technology?

Let us consider in more detail the main stages of installation of a decorative “window” in the floor:

  • Prepare a recess in the bottom of the floor for mounting a niche or increase the floor by 15 cm for the podium.
  • Along the perimeter, install a metal profile, lowering it below the final floor level by the thickness of the glass sheet and sealant. Fasten the profile with self-tapping screws.
  • Finish the inside of the niche.
  • Make a strob at the base of the base floor, in which hide the wires coming from the backlight to the nearest switch or distributor.
  • Fix the backlight. If this is an LED strip, then just stick it on a double-sided tape on the bottom of the protruding part of the metal profile.
  • Next, lay the main floor covering, under which the wires going to the backlight will be masked.
  • Clean the niche from the rubble of construction, lay out the beautifully selected decor, which will be visible under the glass surface of the floor.
  • Place a custom-made glass sheet on a metal frame, and be sure to use a sealant. Glass should not come in contact with metal elements of the base, as well as fasteners.
  • Fix the structure with steel bolts, fill the seams with sealant.
  • Fix the decorative profile, not forgetting to put a seal that excludes the contact of the finishing frame with the glass surface.

The original solution in the interior of the bathroom

By installing a glass floor in the bathroom, you can be sure of the originality of this design solution. To reduce the likelihood of sliding on a flat glass surface, use sandblasting technology.

Using backlight with an adjustable mechanism will create a romantic atmosphere in the bathroom. The perception of space varies depending on the chosen color and light intensity.
