Why drywall can not be placed on the floor

Drywall finishing will be durable and high-quality only if you follow the rules for working with this practical and very popular material. Due to its properties, it allows you to achieve perfectly smooth surfaces. But the material must not be placed on the floor for storage. Studying the features of drywall will help to understand why there is such a ban.

Reasons for the ban

Proper storage of drywall

Sheets of material consist of several layers of cardboard and gypsum, they are easily deformed and absorb moisture. Therefore, manufacturers have developed clear requirements for the conditions of drywall storage, because after purchase and transportation it can be in the room for several more days where the finishing work is going on.

To prevent the sheets from deteriorating, it is important to adhere to the following rules:

  • products must be stored in a room with an air temperature above 10 ° C;
  • 2-3 days are required to adapt the material before installation;
  • the room should be dry, and it is important to keep the door closed;
  • distance to heating radiators - not less than 1.5 m;
  • packages should be located on a flat surface;
  • jumps in temperature and humidity must be avoided.

Non-compliance with the manufacturer's recommendations can lead to unpleasant consequences:

  • deformation;
  • cracking;
  • swelling
  • stains on the cardboard layer.

It is strictly forbidden to put drywall on the floor with an edge at an angle to the wall. In this case, deformation will inevitably occur under the own weight of the plate.

Storage rules

Drywall storage under a canopy

The best way to store them is to put the plates on a flat wooden pallet or boards. At the same time, the height from the floor should be about 10–20 cm, then the material will reach the moment of installation in perfect condition. To protect the GCR from dust and moisture from above, a plastic film will help. Fold sheets should face up.

If there are no pallets or other support nearby, then you can place a sealed drywall on the floor, placing several layers of film under it. A rack beam is also suitable as a support. It must be placed along sheets with a distance between planks of not more than 30–40 cm so that the weight of the package is evenly distributed.

If there is not enough room in the room for horizontal laying of plates, then short vertical storage is allowed.

To ensure that the sheets are less stressed, they must be moved as close to the wall as possible.

In case of violation of storage conditions, the manufacturer will not accept the damaged product back and will not exchange for a new one. Therefore, it is so important to take a responsible approach to ensuring the correct location and temperature in the room where the material is located before repair.
