9 mistakes in the design of small apartments that make space even smaller

Owners of small apartments know firsthand how difficult it is to correctly place all things in the available square meters. Some make the same mistakes in home improvement, because of which a small room looks cluttered and cramped.

Tiered ceiling

A difficult top is made to delimit the space of large rooms. Or in order to reduce the height. In a small room, a multilevel ceiling will only reduce, limit space, “eat up” the volume, which is already lacking.

For small apartments, the most optimal solution is to make an even light ceiling. It will visually add volume.

Dark ceiling and floor

As in the previous example, dark planes compress space. If it is a floor and a ceiling, there will be a feeling of a very low room. They will "crush." Dark walls can also visually reduce a room and absorb a lot of light. Therefore, do not make large surface areas of dark shades.

You can select only a small area, but most of the interior is done in bright colors.

Volumetric Chandeliers

Such lighting instances are designed for large houses, where a voluminous chandelier can become an accent. In small rooms, large lamps attract attention and fill the whole space. Often they prevent you from moving freely, you can touch them with your head or hand.

Modest-sized dwellings are better suited to powerful point lamps that give a lot of light without reducing the volume.

Bulky furniture

Owners of small houses make a big mistake when they acquire massive furniture in order to clean up more things there. Such cabinets, chests of drawers and sofas will take away precious square meters, will attract attention and will crush with their bulky appearance.

The best alternative would be laconic built-in furniture with a well-thought-out storage system. In this, you can place things much more compactly than in a finished large cabinet.

Room dividers

The partition will further reduce space. Some in this way want to zon the room, but in the end they get a complex structure in which there is no easy access and quick access to other parts of the apartment.

If separation is necessary, use existing furniture, home plants, design elements. A lightweight folding screen can also help. At night, set it to the right place, and fold it again in the morning.

Massive doors

Too large, heavy doors will visually reduce rooms, especially when open. They can interfere, attract all the attention. Therefore, it is best to install lightweight sliding or hidden doors.

Heavy curtains

Volumetric, too dense, heavy curtains look very bulky in a small room. They trim the space, do not let light through. For greater openness, use translucent tulle, light curtains or discard them altogether. The interior will become more light and airy.

Abundance of details

Overloading with various objects in a small apartment creates the appearance of disorder, chaos, lack of air. When there are too many paintings hanging on the walls, on the shelves there are many souvenirs, interior items, things, then they take away all the free space, leaving the owners only a small part of it.

Try to remove excess objects as much as possible, freeing up surfaces. So you visually increase the area.

Large wallpaper patterns

Volumetric drawings on the walls attract the eye, visually narrow the space. If you stick wallpaper with a large pattern in a small room, bring furniture, then there will be no free volume that can expand the room. You can add a few small details, thanks to which the room will become open, filled with air.
