Tell me how to choose the right putty for parquet?

In the house we bought, the old parquet was preserved - very beautiful, but well-groomed. They decided for a long time whether to tear it off or not, but in the end, they decided to try to restore it. The dies do not creak or stagger, but the varnish cracked and cracked in places. In some places, quite large gaps appeared. Masters with a grinder have already been found. They decided to do the rest on their own. But I just can’t pick up the putty to match the color of the parquet - it’s very unusual, I don’t even know what kind of wood it is from. And to leave a polished parquet open for a long time is scary. Advise what to do.

If there are no cracks and large chips on the dies, the parquet can really be restored. Feel free to proceed with grinding, observing the technology. The fact is that after this procedure the color of the parquet can change greatly. It is possible that the existing shade is due to aging and contamination of the varnish. Or maybe his original tone.

If you can’t find a suitable putty, you can use the "old-fashioned methods":

  • The wood dust remaining after grinding can be mixed with PVA glue to a paste-like mass. In this case, the color will be exactly as you need it - a little lighter than the main array. Rub the paste into the cracks with a spatula and remove the excess. After the grout has dried, the floor must be sanded again with a fine abrasive. It should be noted that over the years this mixture darkens. At the joints of the planks, this is not too noticeable, but if you have to cover up a chip somewhere, in a few years this place will become noticeable.
  • The next method is more time consuming, but the result is worth it. The same wood dust must be mixed with varnish, which will then cover the floor. The color is perfect. The disadvantages of this method include the weak plasticity of the resulting mass, which means that working with it is much more difficult. In addition, you need to knead the "paste" in small portions - the varnish dries quickly enough.

Important! The largest manufacturers of varnish call the main advantage of the latest positions of their products the ability not to stick the strips together. When using just such a varnish, the grout may fall out.

  • In recent years, a lot of professional compounds have appeared that are used instead of glue and varnish. These are the so-called putty binders. That is, in the initially colorless liquid, you add sawdust and bring it to the desired consistency. Using such tools is convenient, but they are quite expensive. The most popular manufacturers of such formulations include Loba, Bona and Forbo.
  • If you do not want to bother with the preparation of the composition, pay attention to the sealants. The color gamut of them is much wider than that of putties. However, in the warm season, when the wood expands, the sealant can “squeeze”.

Whatever grouting material you choose, remember that you only need to putty the parquet with a rubber spatula, pressing the composition deep into the cracks.
