How to make a floor cake in a wooden floor

Good evening! Tell me, please, I want to make a room above the garage, the logs of the ceiling are wooden. What kind of film to lay (there is reinforced polyethylene, isospan B, isospan F, isospan AM, and another. How to make a floor cake (below the garage, the top is a warm room). In the second part of the building on the first floor I plan the ground floor (pillow, termite, screed, water floor heating, screed, coating), but I’m confused how to make a “pie” in a wooden floor in this part of the building.

Hello Dmitry.

Warming and soundproofing of the upper floor is not particularly difficult. You can use any suitable materials, it is important only to comply with the technology and not forget about the recommendations of experienced craftsmen.

In your case, it will be necessary to process the beams and floorboards with means that prevent rot and mold. After that, waterproofing is laid on them. Of course, it is better to use not a simple polyethylene film, but a material with good diffusion capabilities, for example, the Isospan you mentioned.

Since it is required to make a “pie” of insulation in the ceiling inside the building, it is best to take Izospan B - it has suitable characteristics and a reasonable price. Of course, the membrane with the AM marking has a higher strength, but for your purposes its use is excessive and will lead only to additional costs. Do not forget that the film must be laid in such a way as to remove moisture, so it is oriented with the fleecy side toward thermal insulation. It is important to glue all joints with adhesive tape - the vapor barrier must be solid and free from damage and tearing.

The next stage is laying the insulation. You can use both mineral wool slabs and any rolled materials. Believe me, the fantastic capabilities of a heat insulator of a brand are greatly exaggerated. It is only important that the thickness of its layer is sufficient for your living conditions. In the middle zone of Russia, more than 20 cm of insulation will be more than enough, provided that there is constant heating.

Further, the thermal insulation material must be covered with the same Isospan B vapor barrier membrane, with its smooth side up. As in the previous case, take care of the tightness of the joints. On this installation of the “warm cake” can be considered completed and proceed with the installation of the draft floor of the upper floor. By the way, if you plan to use not plywood, but OSB or OSB for its arrangement, it is best to leave a gap of 1-2 cm between them and the thermal insulation layer for ventilation.
