Dismantling the old and installing a new wooden door threshold

The threshold is most often set in front of the front door so that drafts, dust and noise from outside do not get into the room. Small sills in the lower part of the interior doorway serve other purposes. They contribute to the accurate design of the transitions between different floor coverings. Thresholds can be made of different materials, however, wooden products are most preferred today. They are in perfect harmony with the door leaf and flooring, are environmentally friendly material and, among other things, are durable. However, even such thresholds sooner or later become worthless. Chips, cracks, scratches form on them. If these irregularities are insignificant, then they can be putty putty on wood, and then sanded with a grinder or manually with sanding paper. After painting or varnishing, such a threshold will look like new and will last a few more years. In the event that the threshold is not subject to restoration, only one thing remains: to dismantle the old product and install a new one in its place.

Dismantling of a damaged wooden threshold

As a rule, an ordinary wooden threshold is easily dismantled with scrap metal. To do this, one end of the scrap with a hammer is tightly hammered under the lower part of the threshold, and then with the same hammer they hit the free end of the scrap, which in this case acts as a lever. A few bumps are usually enough for the threshold, along with the nails holding it, to be knocked out of its place.

You can dismantle the old threshold with a crowbar and a nail puller

If these efforts have not led to anything, you will have to go a more complicated way. Try to remove the nails that hold the threshold firmly with a nail clipper. After that, removing the threshold is not difficult - just knock it out with a hammer. Sometimes for this you have to saw a long threshold into several parts and remove each of them individually. It is easier to remove the wooden threshold fixed to the floor using self-tapping screws. To dismantle them, you need to unscrew them with a screwdriver or a screwdriver.

After the old threshold has been dismantled, the base for the new product must be thoroughly cleaned of debris. Sweep dust off with a broom or vacuum, then wipe the surface with a damp cloth. Wait for it to dry completely and feel free to proceed with the installation of a new threshold.

Setting a new threshold instead of the old

First you need to measure the distance between the opposite racks of the door frame. We measure this distance at our doorstep, adding an additional about 4-5 cm. If the length of the purchased doorstep is longer, then we simply saw off the extra centimeters with a saw.

We measure the necessary threshold length

We cut out protrusions on both sides of the doorposts corresponding in thickness to the new threshold (the length of the protrusions is 2-2.5 cm). They are needed so that the threshold is inserted into the grooves of the lower part of the door frame - so the installation will be better, that is, the threshold will be held better.

The threshold should fit snugly into the grooves on the door frames.

Before starting the installation of the threshold, you should install it in the designated place and make sure that the doors are freely closed and open. Also, the lower part of the door must be in contact with the threshold - this is a prerequisite when setting the threshold in front of the front door. When making the threshold near the interior doors, you can not pay attention to this.

Now it remains to solve the question of how to fix a new wooden threshold. Most often, ordinary nails are used for this. The only thing that driving them directly into the threshold wood is undesirable - there is a high probability of cracks and breaks. Experts recommend that in place of future nails in the threshold, first drill holes with a drill. Pick a nozzle that matches the diameter of your nails and drill the right number of holes with it. When they are ready, hammer in nails in them. Instead of nails, self-tapping screws can be used, easily screwed into the threshold wood with a screwdriver. To mask unsightly hats of screws that are too visible on the surface of the threshold, you can use special decorative caps.

If you have to install a wooden threshold on a concrete base, then you cannot do with nails or self-tapping screws alone. You will have to use the dowels quick installation. For this, holes are drilled in a concrete base with a drill, the same holes are made in a wooden threshold. After this, the threshold is superimposed on the space reserved for it, and dowels and impact screws are screwed into pre-made holes, which will be held firmly in concrete and in wood.

After you place and fix the threshold near the door, you should think about its external design. Paint it with oil paint or varnish (glossy or matte). As a rule, the decorative design of the threshold corresponds to the appearance of the door leaf and the box or floor covering (laminate, parquet, linoleum, tile, etc.).

Installing a wooden threshold is within the power of any home foreman, so it simply does not make sense to call a construction team for this. Try our tips with benefit and do this small home repair yourself!

I also did not think that removing the old threshold would not be so easy. I had to cut it into pieces and only so managed to dismantle, the nails were hammered be healthy. The new one was screwed on so that the next generation of the family would not suffer :) I did not put on caps for hats. He took a drill with a diameter of hats, made a recess under them, screwed it to the end and rubbed it with wood putty.

For some reason, repair of thresholds on the Internet is undeservedly given little attention! When they made repairs, they climbed for a long time, but they did not find a clear detailed instruction, they had to be guided by their own logic and intuition. I can’t say that it turned out badly, but familiarizing yourself with such articles here before will not hurt.
