Why did unpainted spots appear after coating the parquet with polyurethane varnish

The parquet was scraped and coated with American polyurethane varnish in two layers with intermediate drying for 4 hours (indicated on the label). After drying, they saw the "lack of color." The master suggested putting another layer. They did not find the same varnish and bought tikkurilu, also on polyurethane. Covered two more times, but still there were the same defects in different places. How to fix the situation at low cost?

Best regards, Sergei.

Expert Answer

Hello, Sergey.

Most likely, the material is applied in an excessively thick layer. Despite the fact that the gloss of a polyurethane varnish directly depends on the thickness, it is not worth overdoing it. The fact is that in this case, the components are deposited unevenly, causing the same "neprokras". To eliminate such a defect, the floor is matted with a fine sandpaper and covered with a thin layer of varnish.

If you do everything right, then the reason for the “bald spots” may lie in the floor itself. Wood perfectly absorbs oils, which are the basis of any mastic. They can also act on the surface of the planks after hitching, provoking the appearance of unpainted areas. In addition, the appearance of spots can provoke a low temperature or excessive humidity - perhaps the walls did not have time to dry after puttying or sticker wallpaper. In this case, you should wait until normal humidity is restored or turn on the heater and raise the air temperature to room temperature.

It is also important with which tool the varnish is applied. Manufacturers recommend working with a velor or fur roller with a short pile - it will allow you to get a uniform shine over the entire surface due to a more accurate distribution of the mixture.

Eliminate all the stated reasons and adhere strictly to the technology developed by the manufacturer - only in this case you can count on success.
