Is it possible to lay new linoleum on top of the old?

I’m doing repairs in the apartment, has already reached the floors. I want to lay a new linoleum. I just don’t know if it’s worth taking off the old one (lasted 10 years) or can you just lay a new one on top?

What is necessarily taken into account when laying linoleum?

To answer this question, you definitely need to know the principles of laying flooring, and in particular, linoleum. It should be noted that linoleum in its performance characteristics refers to universal floor materials. It has high strength, aesthetically attractive, resistant to various influences, and most importantly, very easy to install.

The base for linoleum should be flat
The base for linoleum should be perfectly flat

A key condition that must be observed when laying this flooring is a pre-leveled base. For this purpose, experts recommend using special substrates. Old linoleum is in many respects similar in its characteristics to similar materials, therefore, in principle, the function of such a substrate can quite successfully.

Note! Before installing a new flooring, the old linoleum needs to be prepared in advance: sanded using rough sandpaper, and then carefully primed.

When is it better to get rid of old linoleum?

Naturally, there are cases when laying a new linoleum on an old coating is not just undesirable, but in principle impossible. A similar situation will arise in such cases:

  • Deformation of the old surface - there are folds, swelling, breakouts or other damage to the linoleum.
  • The presence of mold - it does not matter on the front side or on the inside.
  • Poor condition of the base, which is under the old coating.
Deformed old coating must be removed.
Deformed old coating needs to be disposed of.

Attention! You can lay a new coating on the old linoleum only if the latter is in perfect condition. It does not define gaps or gaps at the joints. In addition, it is advisable to lay a new linoleum on top of a perfectly fixed old, that is, glued.

If the old material has minor defects, say, a little torn in several places, then you can previously restore it. Torn parts need to be glued together. It is important to remember that cracks cannot be eliminated using compositions with polyester substances. These components can subsequently cause color loss with new linoleum.

New linoleum cannot be put on such joints

I have linoleum in all rooms, and in the kitchen there are 40 x 40 plates. The linoleum is completely whole, and the plates cracked and pieces broke off in some places. I just wanted to lay a new linoleum on top, but it turns out that it will be necessary to glue all the pieces, and then only put linoleum on top.
