The design of the “pie” hydro-noise insulation with electric floor heating

Good day!

I am making repairs in an apartment on the second floor in a Soviet two-story building. The house is about 40 years old. Concrete floors crumble. I want to lay an unprocessed massive board and an electric heated floor, as a small child is at home. In order not to interfere with the neighbors from below, I plan on hydro and sound insulation. What kind of “pie” will be needed for the floor, and is it possible to combine insulation between noise insulation and the electric floor.

Hello Aizhan!

In your case, the design of the hydro noise insulation pie may look like this:

  • waterproof film;
  • plates of extruded polystyrene foam;
  • reflective thermal insulation;
  • massive board;
  • electric heated floor;
  • waterproofing;
  • fine coating.

This is one of the most versatile options that has proven itself in the process of operation. At the same time, I would like to give you some recommendations that will allow you to achieve the desired effect and make the floor more durable.

So, before you do waterproofing, be sure to repair the old concrete base. To do this, remove the screed in those places where it has peeled off or cracked, and then seal up the defective places with a cement-sand mortar. When laying waterproofing, be sure to glue all the joints with special construction tape. Of course, it is best to use films and membranes specially designed for this purpose, but thick polyethylene can also be used to reduce the cost. The choice of extruded polystyrene foam is due to its high hardness, however you can use high density foam (at least 25 kg / cubic meter).

In order to reduce the spread of heat in the floor, on top of the sound insulation, lay a thin roll insulation with a foil layer. During installation, the latter should be oriented with a metallized surface towards the room. When choosing an electric heated floor, preference should be given to film heaters - they will allow you to use any finish coating, including carpet and linoleum. In addition, infrared heating is characterized by softer heat and an almost complete absence of electromagnetic radiation, which is important in the room where the small child is.

We hope that our recommendations will help to make a comfortable warm floor that will meet all your needs.
