What is better for a water heat-insulated floor - foil polystyrene or a heat-insulating plate?

Good afternoon, tell me which heat insulator is best used when installing the system underfloor heating with water, in your own house on the 1st floor. It so happened that about 6 years ago, when such sexual structures only "became fashionable," I saw how it was mounted at my brother's house. Then a heater with foil was used, I remember that for sure. But the masters offer me heat-insulating plates, they say that for a long time nobody uses the insulation that I am talking about. Tell me which of the heat insulators to choose !?

Foiled Polystyrene

The heat-insulating material you are talking about is very likely a foil polystyrene. It is made from 30 mm foam boards with a density of 30 kg / m3, which are covered with foil. Until recently, this insulation was widespread and had practically no alternative when creating a floor cake of the "water floor heating" system. It has both advantages and disadvantages. You will find a lot of information about the advantages of foil polystyrene. We will show its shortcomings in terms of application in a private home:

  • Supplied in sheets of 5 square meters. m. - not to avoid residues.
  • On top of it, you must definitely lay a plastic film.
  • To fix the pipes there are no ready-made clamps - you have to come up with a variety of devices. And this is an additional cost, you will have to buy clamps, mounting rails, guide rails, etc. Under these conditions, it is very difficult to fill the pipes with mortar - a very high risk of damage.

Thermal insulation boards

The heat-insulating plate is made of high-density polystyrene foam, which has high mechanical strength. From above it is covered with mylar film. “Columns” are specially arranged on the surface of the slab, which allows reliable and convenient laying of the water-heated floor pipeline. Moreover, on the plate there are special side locks that allow you to form a continuous homogeneous shield over the entire sexual surface of the room. The bottom surface of the plate is pimply, which contributes to the absorption of noise and smooths out unevenness of the base.

We think this information is enough to make the optimal choice of heat-insulating material. Although it is obvious that a heat insulation plate is a more relevant option.
