What is better to cover a massive board - oil or varnish?

I need the help of an independent expert. I have a private house (built 30 years ago), made a major overhaul of the facade and walls and ceilings inside. There are floors left. Before that, they were wooden, but at one time boards of not very good quality were used. I plucked them, and I want to make a coating of a massive board. An ordinary board has not been processed by anything, but this moment just led me to a standstill. At the warehouse where he bought, they said that it must be treated with special oil. And I asked my friends who at home, at whom in the country such floors, so they say that now such varnishes are sold, that no oil is needed. Paint, they say, with varnish, and do not suffer - it is beautiful and practical. Tell me, how do I handle a massive board correctly in order to forget about problems with the floors for a few decades?

Hello! We understand that this is a traditional massive board, which, incidentally, is a very good floor material. Your choice is successful. A massive board is currently most often varnished, this method of processing it is very affordable in terms of price. This explains the fact that your friends advised using varnish.

And, here is the advice about special oil, most likely, you were given by a specialist who knows all the qualities of natural wood well. The fact is that oil gives the board not only an external appeal (which is achieved by varnish), but also makes it more durable. And this just prolongs its service life.

Advice! Still, you are going to equip the floor in the whole house. Surely, you have small surpluses. Try opening one small piece with varnish and the other with oil. Comparison will help establish the truth.

We will add that oil-soaked wood looks externally, no less beautiful than varnished. In addition, the oil is made from natural ingredients:

  • beeswax;
  • specially treated vegetable oil.

The wood treated with this product is impregnated by approximately 2 mm. As a result, a glossy film is not created on the surface, which is not always appropriate and not everyone likes. And, lastly: oil prevents mold and mildew. We can say that it preserves wood.

Anyway, you still have to choose. Coating solid wood with varnish, for example, is a more affordable option. We hope that our tips will help you make the right choice.
