What is the reason that floor tiles peeled off on the terrace?

In my house on the ground floor there is a large semi-open terrace. That is, there is a canopy and up to half is sewn up with wood. Paul was leveled a couple of years ago with a concrete screed, and a tile was laid on top of the glue, and this year after the winter it began to fall off. The same tile was first put on the same glue in the corridor, and then such a coating, so to speak, continued on the terrace. For laying tiles used glue CERESIT SM-117. The master, who did the floor, assured that the coating will be "100 years old", and it will last only 2 years. Tell me, please, what's wrong? Maybe problems will appear in the corridor soon? Maybe the glue is wrong?

Hello! In principle, with regard to glue, then everything is selected correctly. Glue for tile CERESIT SM-117 is designed for laying on strong non-deformable substrates. In addition, the manufacturer himself positions it as adhesive for facing surfaces that can be subjected to constant atmospheric influences. It is recommended to use it when installing the floor on balconies and terraces.

An important point! Before starting laying the tiles, the surface of the base must be cleaned of debris, dust, oil stains, sagging, etc. This will ensure maximum adhesion of the solution to the base.

Adhesive mixture preparation conditions

  • Pure water is used for dissolution.
  • Permissible temperature of the work is from +15 to + 20 ° C.
  • The finished mixture should be aged for at least 5 minutes.
  • The solution is again thoroughly mixed and used as intended.

Ready solution of adhesive for tiles CERESIT SM-117 is suitable for work within 2 hours.

Under optimal conditions (temperature + 20 ° C, and relative humidity 60% air), the tile should be laid no later than 20 minutes after the adhesive is applied to the substrate. Other conditions may change the time of debarking, setting, and hardening.

Possible causes of tile rejection

The reason may be a poorly prepared foundation
The most likely cause is a poorly prepared foundation

In your situation, the following circumstances may serve as reasons for peeling tiles from the terrace floor:

  1. Poorly prepared base.
  2. Violated the manufacturing technology of the adhesive mixture.
  3. Unsustainable technological conditions when performing work in the process of applying glue to the base.
  4. The base is not entirely stable.

Even in winter, water gets under the tile through the cracks and freezes, tears it off and it doesn’t matter if you followed the technology of preparation and application of glue.
